Pool Safety Checklist

  • Constant adult supervision; stay within arm’s reach of young children.
  • Check water depth and temperature; use shallow areas for beginners.
  • Clear poolside of slips/trips; no running or diving.
  • Have rescue aids nearby (pole, towel, throw ring).
  • Know emergency numbers and pool address.
  • Choose quiet times; avoid crowded, noisy sessions.
  • Use well-fitted life jackets in open water; don’t rely on inflatable armbands alone.
  • Agree simple rules with your child before entering the pool.
  • Keep first sessions short; stop if your child is cold or tired.
  • Hydrate and take warm breaks.

DOs & DON’Ts

  • Be the lifeguard: eyes on the child at all times.
  • Stand where you can reach them quickly.
  • Practise Reach – Throw – Don’t Go from the side.
  • Don’t turn away to use your phone.
  • Don’t push or surprise dunk.
  • Don’t let children swim alone, ever.
